I just read a really, really good argument for privacy:
Too many wrongly characterize the debate as "security versus privacy." The real choice is liberty versus control. Tyranny, whether it arises under threat of foreign physical attack or under constant domestic authoritative scrutiny, is still tyranny. Liberty requires security without intrusion, security plus privacy. Widespread police surveillance is the very definition of a police state. And that's why we should champion privacy even when we have nothing to hide.
I really would like to see a political party actually take a stand for liberty, but that is very unlikely. Even though 9/11 occurred almost 5 years ago, the political climate is still too hot. The legislation past in the short time after the attack by fear mongers and those looking to gain power from the tragedy of others still gains strength today.
Once we give up liberties we never get them back.
